In 2024-25, only 24% of stem cell transplants in the UK utilized a UK donor, despite the UK Stem Cell Strategic Forum's recommendation that the country should have a supply of 45% of UK donors. The report also highlights the stark health inequalities faced by people from minority-ethnic backgrounds who require a stem cell transplant. These individuals have only a 37% chance of finding a well-matched donor, compared to 72% for white patients from a northern European background. Addressing this issue will require a combination of strategies, including supporting the growth of registries in under-represented parts of the world.
