Laika’s latest work, Wildwood, marks a return to her roots in a stop-motion animated film since its 2019 Oscar-nominated predecessor, The Missing Link. Directed by Travis Knight (who grew up in Portland), the film follows Prue McKeel, a headstrong teenager whose baby brother is abducted by crows. As she embarks on a dangerous mission in the Impassable Wilderness, she must confront grief, ambition, and the fragile balance of a forest hidden beyond Portland, OR. Wildwood is adapted from the book series co-written by Colin Meloy, who previously directed Coraline and ParaNorman. The inclusion of a M83 song, “My Tears Are Becoming a Sea,” adds an auditory element that enhances the narrative. Personally, I find this movie particularly fascinating because it explores themes that many people often overlook—how small moments in life can have profound effects—and invites reflection on our relationship with the environment. What makes this particularly fascinating is how it balances action with heartfelt storytelling, creating a unique experience for audiences.
